Attractions by Public Transport

Many people now choose to leave their car behind when coming to Cornwall.  To get to Padstow by public transport look at our Travel Directions. Once you get to Padstow, here are some suggestions of what can you see that doesn't involve travelling by car. Bus timetables are available from Western Greyhound 01637 871 871 (07:45-18:15 Monday to Saturday and 09:30-16:30 on Sundays).  Train timetables are available from National Rail.

In Padstow

There is a range of activites to do in Padstow.  For more information click here.  There are many wonderful walks around the area.  The South West Coast Path and Saint's Way are particularly popular. The Tourist Office sells a Town Trail which guides you around Padstow and points out all the buildings of interest.

The Camel Trail is the old railway line from Padstow to Bodmin.  It has become very popular with cyclists and walkers alike. Hire a bike from one of the cycle hire shops and cycle the camel trail to Wadebridge or Bodmin.  The route goes right past the Camel Valley Vineyard.  Alternatively you can walk the Camel Trail.

Boat Trips - There are speed boats that run regularly throughout the summer.  Look out for them on the quayside.  The Jubilee Queen runs longer trips.  Times vary daily due to the tides and weather and are published on boards around the quay.  Fishing trips are also available, click here for more details.

Out and About

Lanhydrock - This National Trust Property is near Bodmin Parkway Station.  Take the 555 bus to Bodmin Parkway and walk 3/4 mile up the old carriage way to the House.

Beaches - You can walk to the beaches in the estuary.  The nearest is less than 5 minutes walk from the town.  There are some lovely beaches on the other side of the estuary - catch the ferry across.  Alternatively catch the 556 bus to Newquay.  It passes all of the beaches between here and Newquay; too numerous to list!

Eden Project - You can get to the Eden project by getting the 555 bus to Bodmin Parkway station, catching a train to St Austell then picking up the 527 bus link from St Austell train station. You can also get the 556 bus to Newquay and then the 527 from Newquay to Eden via St Austell.

Lost Gardens of Heligan - You can get the 556 bus to Newquay and change to the 527 then the 526 bus to Heligan.

Pencarrow - This wonderful, privately owned house is near the village of Washaway.  Get the 555 bus to Washaway and walk up the drive to the house.

Walking - The coast path between Padstow and Newquay is fabulous.  The 556 bus runs parallel to the coast path so that you can walk as far as you like and get the bus back.

Japanese Bonsai Garden, St Mawgan Village - The 556 bus goes through the peaceful village of St Mawgan.  The village itself is well worth a visit.  As well as home to the Japanese Garden, it has its own closed order nunnery, church, craft shop, pub, cafe and river running though it.

Tintagel/Boscastle - You can catch the 555 bus to Wadebridge and pick up the 594 to Boscastle/Tintagel.  Alternatively you can catch the ferry to Rock, pick up the 584 to Camelford and swap onto the 594.

Truro - The capital (and only) city of Cornwall.  This Cathedral city is well worth a visit.  You can catch the 555 and get the train to Truro or you can get the 554 to St Columb Major and change onto the 597.

Bodmin - The 555 bus goes directly to Bodmin.  Alternatively you can cycle there on the Camel Trail.  Bodmin used to be the capital town of Cornwall.  It is a lovely old market town famous for its jail.

Wadebridge - Wadebridge is a market town with lots of craft shops and cafes.  It has the main bridge over the River Camel (it is the nearest place to cross the river by car).  The 555 bus goes directly to Wadebridge.  Alternatively you can cycle there on the Camel Trail.

Newquay - The 556 bus goes to Newquay along the coast road.  There are fantastic beaches all the way.
