Nowhereisland in Newquay

nowherisland by Max McClure

Type: Exhibition

Visitors to Newquay this summer should look out for an extraordinary sight. Nowhereisland, a new island nation originating from the Arctic, is voyaging around the south west’s spectacular coastline, as part of an epic voyage of over 500 nautical miles during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This new island nation is planned to be in Newquay between the 23rd August and 27th August* and will be anchored off Towan Beach.

Nowhereisland will be accompanied by a mobile Embassy packed full of activities, fascinating resources and informative artefacts that will tell the story of Nowhereisland’s origins and its inspiring journey. There’ll be something for all ages and interests and you’ll even be able to register as a Nowhereisland citizen. You’ll find it parked up on Killacourt, The Crescent offering wonderful views of the island.

The story of Nowhereisland began in 2004, when artist Alex Hartley searched for and discovered an island which had been revealed by the melting ice of a retreating glacier in the High Arctic. Alex was the first human to ever stand on the island and, with the help of the Norwegian Polar Institute, he registered it on all subsequent maps and charts. This island has become Nowhereisland, a new island nation migrating south in search of citizens.
